TC96-M Miniature Multipoint Thermocouple from WIKA

TC96-M Miniature Multipoint Thermocouple from WIKAMultipoint thermocouples are often used to measure temperature profiles in reactors or fuel depots, as well as to detect the so-called hotspots.

Individual measuring points are stuffed or drawn into an outer protection tube. The measuring points are placed at various levels to suit the application. Depending on customer needs, the protection tube is then assembled with a process connection for direct mounting or inside a guide tube. Connection terminals or temperature transmitters are placed in the connection housing, which is either a component of the multipoint thermocouple or can be mounted separately, e.g., on a wall or pipeline.

These assemblies are used when a temperature profile is desired, and the mass, or size, of the sensor is a limitation. They can be constructed in a wide variety of configurations to suit the specific application.

For example, it is possible in some applications to add a traversing ability to the multipoint thermocouple. This allows for continuous data collection over the entire distance of the traverse stroke. This feature can help gather important information relating to catalyst or process activity. These traversing units can be electrically driven with precise feedback on position.

TC96-M Miniature Multipoint Thermocouple Q & A

+ What is the WIKA TC96-M Miniature Multipoint Thermocouple and what is it used for?
The WIKA TC96-M is a miniature multipoint thermocouple designed to measure temperature at multiple locations along a single probe. It is used to create detailed temperature profiles inside vessels, reactors, columns, and storage tanks where temperature stratification or localized hot spots can affect product quality, safety, or process efficiency. By combining multiple thermocouple junctions in a compact design, the TC96-M minimizes process penetration while delivering highly accurate, real-time temperature data for industrial process control applications.

+ Which industries commonly use the TC96-M multipoint thermocouple?
The TC96-M is widely used in the chemical, petrochemical, refining, and energy industries, particularly in applications such as reactor temperature profiling, fuel storage monitoring, and process column optimization. Its miniature design makes it well-suited for installations with limited space, including retrofit projects in existing plants. In North America, it is frequently specified by engineering teams in refineries, chemical plants, and industrial processing facilities that require reliable, long-term temperature monitoring in demanding environments
+ What materials and process connection options are available for the TC96-M?
The WIKA TC96-M multipoint thermocouple is typically supplied with a 316L stainless steel protection tube, providing excellent corrosion resistance and durability in industrial process conditions. Depending on the application, alternative materials and custom sheath diameters and insertion lengths are available. The sensor can be configured with threaded or flanged process connections to meet common industrial mounting standards, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of vessels, reactors, and piping systems.

+ How do I select the correct thermocouple type and configuration for my application?
Selecting the correct TC96-M configuration depends on several factors, including the operating temperature range, process medium, required number of measurement points, and control system compatibility. The TC96-M supports various thermocouple types, such as Type K or Type J, allowing it to integrate seamlessly with PLCs, DCS systems, and temperature transmitters. Working with a knowledgeable process instrumentation supplier like Valin helps ensure the sensor design, materials, and junction placement are optimized for performance, accuracy, and long-term reliability.

+ Can the TC96-M thermocouple be serviced or recalibrated after installation?
Yes, the TC96-M is designed with serviceability in mind. Its modular construction allows individual thermocouple elements to be replaced or serviced without removing the entire protection tube, which helps reduce maintenance time and process downtime. Many industrial facilities in the U.S. and Canada also take advantage of calibration and verification services to maintain measurement accuracy over the life of the sensor, particularly in critical temperature-controlled processes.
