David started at Valin in 2011 as a Market Research Analyst, he later moved into Digital Strategy focusing on data quality and reporting. In 2016, David introduced Microsoft PowerBI to Valin, which visualizes data analytics and business reporting. Before Power BI, getting a report could take up to two weeks, depending on the complexity. Today, that information is instantly available, allowing us to make fast, informed decisions. By 2017, he led a team that integrated PowerBI reporting and market intelligence into our daily operations. Initially adopted by our executives, Power BI replaced the need for complicated crystal reports to pull data from our business systems and made it visual and self-service.

It quickly became invaluable for our sales managers and other team members. Having one source of data truth and real time access has transformed how we make decisions as everyone speaks the same language and we can quickly identify issues and opportunities that need to be addressed.

From there, he coupled the market research and sizing work for our energy and semiconductor markets to identify new opportunities for Valin to capture market share. Many of our marketing and sales initiatives spawned from this research. By connecting PowerBI dashboards to this data and our sales and marketing campaigns, it enabled us to recognize organic revenue being generated from our marketing team’s campaign efforts to determine which initiatives needed to be improved and scaled.

Thanks to David, we’re able to make smarter decisions quicker across the entire company. His innovative approach and effective use of technology like PowerBI have significantly propelled us forward.

The Monsen Innovation award recipients are recognized for their outstanding accomplishments and dedication to our company.  The inspiration for this award (and the first award recipient) was Jon Monsen. Jon F. Monsen, Ph.D., P.E., was a control valve technology specialist at Valin for many years. Jon wrote a book titled, Control Valve Application Technology, Techniques and considerations for properly selecting the right control valve. This book was published by Valin and is currently sold on our ecommerce site. Monsen possessed 35 years of industry experience and lectured nationally and internationally on control valve sizing and application.
