FLD-SMC High-Performance Leak Detection Controller from NaftosenseFLD-SMC is a high-performance all in one monitoring controller built into one budget conscious package. It is designed for detecting leaks of refined petroleum products and solvents in extreme environmental conditions when installed with approved sensors FLD-HSC-TL and FLD-O2W-SP. The device is a wall-mounted standalone leak detection controller. The maximum sensor length is limited to 150 ft/45 m per FLD-SMC distributed in three separate zones. These leak detection controllers (FLD-SMC) offer industry-standard output communications:

  • Modbus RTU
  • Modbus TCP
  • Dry contacts (2 SPDT Relays)

For classified locations applications, the sensor cables and the sensor probe will be wired to the controller through a Zener barrier, with FLD-SMC module installed in an area approved enclosure.

+ What sensors are compatible with the FLD-SMC controller, and what is the maximum sensor cable length it can handle?

The FLD-SMC works with approved Naftosense sensors FLD-HSC-TL (hydrocarbon sensor cable) and FLD-O2W-SP (oil-on-water sensing probe). It supports up to three separate sensor zones. Total maximum sensor cable length is 150 ft (≈ 45 m) per controller when distributed across the three separate zones. Each individual sensor cable (per channel) is limited to about 50 ft (15 m) between the sensor and the controller. There is also provision of a leader/jumper cable (minimum AWG22) up to ~30 ft (≈ 90 m).

 
+ What outputs, communication protocols, and alarm/threshold features does the FLD-SMC include?

Outputs/options available include dry contacts (2 SPDT relays) for simple alarm/fault switching. For digital communication, it supports Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP variants in some model options. Some versions include an LCD display that shows leak magnitude; this helps with diagnostics and knowing how severe a leak is. It also has an adjustable alarm threshold, allowing earlier or delayed alarm triggering depending on how sensitive you want it.

+ How fast is detection, and under what environmental/temperature conditions?

Detection times (with approved sensors) at ~20 °C / 68 °F are:

  • Unleaded Gasoline ~20-22 seconds
  • Diesel ~25-28 seconds
  • Jet Fuel ~25-28 seconds

The operating temperature range of the controller is 14 °F to 140 °F (−10 °C to +60 °C). Note: It is meant for indoor use, panel-mounting; the ingress rating is modest (panel-IP40 / NEMA 1) without a special enclosure. Environmental extremes (humidity, dust, etc.) may require protective housing.

  • Power supply options: model variants support 100-240 VAC, or 12-24 VDC input.
  • The controller is wall-mounted. Size is about 5.3″ × 3″ × 2″ (135 × 75 × 50 mm), weight ~0.5 lb (≈ 225 g).
  • The leader/jumper cable (between sensors or probe and the controller) must be AWG22 minimum, and there's a limit on its maximum length (~30 ft / 90 m) for reliable operation.
  • Since ingress rating is IP40 / NEMA 1 for indoor panel mount only, outdoor or hazardous locations may require additional enclosures or barriers, such as a Zener barrier.
