Payroll involves a lot of detailed reviews. Valin has gone through several platforms with ADP in the last 2 years be it with Human Resources (HR) or on the actual payroll. Any changes on the HR side typically affects the Payroll side. With last year’s platforms, Beth Santos has faced a lot of challenges that made her work more time consuming than with the previous platform. She patiently and methodically dealt with employees’ issues concerning their pay when the pay period changed and when vacation accrual was changed from being front-loaded at the beginning of the year to the “per pay cycle” accrual. Aside from those two examples, there were issues with ADP that took up a lot of her time. She worked with ADP to correct errors that were made before payroll transmission was done so that the employee’s pay is accurate. It was a frustrating time for the payroll department but Beth remained calm and patiently worked through the challenges that were presented. Valin reverted to the “tech only” platform to have more control on the process while saving money in the process. Beth is working to make sure that this process runs smoothly going forward.

There are a lot of behind the scenes reviews that Beth does before she submits payroll. Fellow Valin employees are Payroll’s customers, that is why it is important to Beth that the customers get an accurate pay every time. If a manager or supervisor does not approve time cards by the specified due date, she seeks them out so that the manager’s group’s time cards are all approved. If an employee’s total hours worked on the payroll report seem low for the pay cycle, she reviews the time card again. Many times, vacation or sick time is not reported by the supervisor and/or a time off request is not approved on time. So, Beth tries to get in touch with the supervisor again and verify if missing time punches are truly unpaid hours or time off that needs to be reported. This way the employee will not be short paid.

There is not one big situation that would put the Payroll Department in the news. But Beth has the dedication, patience, attention to detail, and willingness to work with supervisors and fellow employees to ensure the accuracy of each employee’s payroll. She is also always willing to answer questions employees have regarding payroll issues. Those characteristics and actions are the extraordinary things that make Beth stand out in the Payroll department.
