Electrical Thermometers in CryoTemp Design from WIKA

Electrical Thermometers in CryoTemp Design from WIKADue to the global use of hydrogen, extremely low-temperature measurement during transport and storage is gaining an ever-greater relevance. For this demanding application, with the CryoTemp design, WIKA provides the most suitable option for all relevant temperature measuring instruments.

In laboratory trials, resistance thermometers (Pt1000) and thermocouples (type E) were tested for their suitability in cryogenic applications. The special design of the CryoTemp features a high accuracy of +/ 3 Kelvin at minus 253 °C.

The test data from the laboratory investigations served as the basis for calculating new polynomials in the range of 258 °C to 200 °C, which are used in the configuration of WIKA transmitters.

CryoTemp Electrical Thermometer Q & A

+ What are CryoTemp electrical thermometers, and what makes WIKA’s design unique?
CryoTemp electrical thermometers are specialized temperature measurement devices engineered for extremely low temperatures and cryogenic applications, such as liquid hydrogen storage, cryogenic pipelines, and hydrogen liquefaction plants. WIKA’s CryoTemp design is optimized to provide high accuracy at temperatures as low as –258 °C, making it suitable for hydrogen transport and storage, where traditional thermometers are not rated. This design supports both resistance thermometers (Pt1000) and thermocouples (type E) with an accuracy of approximately ±3 K at –253 °C, ensuring reliable performance in demanding cryogenic environments.

+ What temperature ranges can WIKA CryoTemp electrical thermometers measure?
WIKA CryoTemp electrical thermometers are designed to measure extremely low temperatures, with operational capability down to around –258 °C (approximately –432 °F) thanks to laboratory-derived calibration polynomials. This ultra-low range is critical for applications involving liquid hydrogen and other cryogenic fluids, where accurate temperature readings are required for safe storage and process control.
+ Which sensing technologies are compatible with CryoTemp electrical thermometers?
CryoTemp electrical thermometers are compatible with all relevant industrial temperature sensors, including precision resistance thermometers (RTDs) and thermocouples suited for cryogenic service. Typical sensor options include Pt1000 resistance elements for highly stable, repeatable readings and type E thermocouples for broad low-temperature coverage. Because the CryoTemp design integrates with various sensor types, it supports flexibility in configuration for different industrial processes.

+ Where are WIKA CryoTemp electrical thermometers commonly used?
These cryogenic electrical thermometers are commonly deployed in petrochemical plants, basic material processing, power generation facilities, and hydrogen infrastructure projects. Typical applications include cryogenic tanks and pipelines, hydrogen fuel storage, and liquefied gas processes, where accurately monitoring extremely low temperatures is essential for process safety, compliance, and efficiency.

+ Can CryoTemp electrical thermometers be used in hazardous or certified areas?
Yes. WIKA’s CryoTemp electrical thermometers are designed to meet the requirements for use in hazardous area installations often found in industrial and cryogenic environments. Their robust construction and compliance with relevant safety standards make them suitable for explosion-risk zones common in hydrogen handling and petrochemical processes, providing both safety and measurement confidence.
